Whether you're a sailor on a life-or-death voyage or an adventurer trying to get home after a plane crash, survival stories are fascinating tales of people who faced incredible obstacles and adversity. The characters in these stories are real and the stories reveal the human spirit and how we overcome adversity. They can include people who survived plane crashes, people who survived in the deserts of Africa or people who survived a deadly sandstorm.
One of the most famous survival stories is Unbroken. In it, a group of men on a ship were lost at sea and fought for survival. The story is set in 1947 and tells the story of Norwegian scientist Thor Heyerdahl's adventure. He set out on his journey with five friends. They traveled 4,439 miles on the Pacific Ocean and then ended up on an island in the Marshall Islands. They survived for almost three months. There was little food and water on the island, and many of the men ended up eating their own urine.
Another survival story is Endurance. This book tells the story of Ernest Shackleton's attempt to make a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of South Atlantic seas. It is a compelling first-hand account of the disaster. In 1914, a ship carrying Shackleton and his men was crushed between two ice floes. The men survived for several months, but then some of the men abandoned the ship for a remote island.
Other Survival Stories include Amra Sabic-El-Rayess's graphic memoir, which details her experiences as a Muslim in Bosnia in the 1990s. It follows her as she fights for her life and seeks to make a return to her home city of Bihac. The book also includes her cat, which is delivered to a safe countryside village.
Another survival story is Louis Zamperini's story, which includes his battle with sharks and thirst. He also endures the Army Air Forces' bomber crash in 1943. Louis Zamperini is a young lieutenant and loves the outdoors. He also fought shark attacks and survived a deadly sandstorm. He eventually moved to Colorado.
In the HISTORY Channel series Alone, contestants are dropped into punishing environments. They have very little clothing, and must use their creativity to survive. One of the contestants becomes ill, and supplies dwindle. It is up to the contestants to find food, water, and shelter before the end of the series.
Other survival stories include a sled race. A girls' fencing team survived an airplane crash on a tropical island. Another is a group of seven Soviet prisoners who escaped from Siberia and made their way to British India. They had to trek through China, the Gobi Desert, and the Himalayas to reach freedom.
In Deep Survival, Laurence Gonzales describes how people can face unexpected crises, and offers practical tips on how to deal with them. The book has a section called "mini true stories" that describe how one wrong decision can turn tragic. This book is a great read for anyone interested in the outdoors.
