The word 'gangsta' is used to describe American hip-hop and its distinct style of music. There are three main gangsta richtings in the United States: the Eastcoast, Westcoast, and Dirty South. Westcoast rappers include Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Nas, Tim Dog, and The Notorious B.I.G. Rapper names in this style are sometimes referred to as 'gangsta rap'.

In 2010, the westkust was rewarded with a heropleving in hiphop. Rappers from the west were more perifere than their peers, but some, like Lil B, have achieved mainstream success. Despite their perifere status, westkust artists have managed to make a name for themselves. But the question remains, who are these artists? Let's take a look.

Many rappers from the west are associated with the Bay Area. Tupac Shakur is perhaps the most famous and influential rapper in the west. Death Row Records was a favored label for these rappers, and The Notorious BIG was one of them. Despite his status as a hip-hop superstar, 50 Cent also made the controversial decision to tattoo his face on his Rappers uit het westen. In the process, his tatted face has become a symbol of his political ideology.

The hip-hop genre gangsta rap is a subset of the genre, with its origins in the early 1990s. The gangsta style began to rise in popularity, and splitsing became popular amongst rappers from the east and west coasts. The trackmasters arranged a Columbia Records contract for him and he spent two weeks in a studio in New York, recording 36 songs. The album, titled 'Power of the Dollar', was a hit with critics and fans alike. Columbia's citation of his "many beats" in the album proved to be one of his strongest selling points.
