If you're interested in making your city or town more welcoming to the LGBT community, you may have heard of the term "gay friendly." But what does it really mean? Gay-friendly refers to policies and environments that make gay people feel welcome, and promote equality. Cities that are "gay-friendly" also have a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere. The term is typically used in a North American context and has developed as a result of the gradual implementation of gay rights.
According to the Gallup Poll, the Netherlands is the world's most gay-friendly country, with 87% of residents saying they are comfortable being themselves. Other European countries are not far behind, including Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Belgium. Compared to the U.S., eight out of ten countries are gay-friendly, and eight are in Europe. Uruguay is ranked seventh, and Canada is in the top 10. There are 780 million people living in countries that recognize gay marriage, and 2.8 billion people who have to live under laws that prohibit gay people from being a part of society.
Malta, a tiny island country in the Mediterranean, has a small but vibrant LGBTQ community. There are several gay bars in the capital Valletta, and a Michelangelo gay club. The country has lax gay laws and a relatively low LGBT crime rate. Two gay men wearing PDAs were never prosecuted, which is a sign of an incredibly gay-friendly country. A recent Eurobarometer poll showed Malta to be the most LGBTQ-friendly country in Europe.
Uruguay has a large gay community, and has a wide range of LGBTQ-friendly places. It has several naturist beaches, and many LGBT-friendly bars and restaurants. Buenos Aires hosts the annual Buenos Aires Gay Pride festival, and it is an excellent place for an LGBTQ holiday. Mendoza, meanwhile, has an active LGBTQ community, and the government funds the GNetwork360 conference every august. While Uruguay is a gay-friendly destination, be aware that it is not a club town.
New Zealand's government has taken steps to make New Zealand more hospitable to the LGBTQ community. In February 2018, the government approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, which aims to make it easier for gay couples to get married. In June 2021, Thailand's top private hospital will open a clinic for LGBTQ+ patients. And the Government recently announced new benefits for employees of companies and government agencies that offer employment to the LGBTQ community. The new benefits include a family health package and marital leave. Homophobia is rare and becoming less common as the young population grows older.
The Gay friendly community in Argentina has long been a trailblazer in the latino media, with Transgender actress Florencia De La Vega playing an openly transgender character in 2004's Los Roldan telenovela. In 2005, the television dating show 12 Corazones-Especial made history by showing two gay men kissing on camera. Its gay mayor Robert Biedron has continued to make history in the LGBT community.
